TUI, the world’s leading travel company, has today launched the ‘TUI Management Degree Apprenticeship’, the first Degree-level apprenticeship in the travel industry, together with the University of Hertfordshire.


The Degree in Business and Management is bespoke and designed by TUI and the University to reflect the modern needs of a global travel business.  Learning modules include hotel design, digital marketing and data science as well as management and leadership modules.  The students will work full-time for TUI in a variety of roles on a rotation basis including in its airline ‘TUI Airways’, Business Change and Commercial functions enabling young people to ‘earn while they learn’ and complete their Degree over four years.


Nick Longman, Managing Director of TUI UK and Ireland said, “The Degree will enable young people to kick start their career at 18.  It will give them a huge advantage over their peers to get a quality Degree-level education and qualification with the University of Hertfordshire, whilst receiving the best on-the-job training in the industry.  At the end of the four years, they will have experienced every aspect of the business, received mentoring by our senior managers and completed a Degree – truly bringing together the theory and the practice.

The students will study with the University of Hertfordshire and receive 25-days on campus learning days to help complete assignments and projects.  Enjoying all of the benefits of being a student including access to all social and sports facilities and the library and learning resources, the students will be part of one of the UK’s leading Universities.


Julie Newlan, the University of Hertfordshire’s Pro-Vice Chancellor (Business and International Development) said, “As a leading business facing University, the University of Hertfordshire is particularly proud of our strong business partnerships and our 60-year history of offering flexible, industry-focused courses to our business partners.  In 1941 we first started partnering with industry to train 15 and 16 year old aircraft apprentices for the de Havilland Aircraft Company and our degree apprenticeship with TUI is a perfect example of how we still work collaboratively to create courses that are shaped by the needs of modern business.

TUI has a strong heritage of recruiting apprentices.  Since the year 2000, more than 5,500 apprenticeships have been offered by TUI in the UK.

This new opportunity is available to anybody who meets the qualifying criteria* and although it’s thought most people applying will be those finishing their A-Levels, TUI is also hoping to receive applications from people of any age and background who may want a change of career or who didn’t study for a Degree and would like to ‘back-fill’ their education whilst continuing to work.

The qualifying criteria are as follows:

  • Ambitious people who are passionate about the travel industry, able to demonstrate:
    • Experience/understanding of the travel industry and TUI
    • Ability to adapt to a changing environment, be conscientious and resilient
    • Ability to demonstrate drive, judgement and influence
    • Demonstrate the TUI values – Trusted, Unique, Inspiring
  • GCSE English Language and Mathematics at grade C or above, or equivalent qualifications plus
  • Predicted outcomes equivalent to 96 – 112 UCAS points from qualifications which include a minimum of two GCE A levels/AVCEs or one GCE/ AVCE Double Award or two BTEC Subsidiary Diplomas or one BTEC Diploma or one BTEC Extended Diploma, or
  • An overall pass in an Access to Higher Education Diploma with a Merit profile in the 45 Level 3 credits, to include Grade C equivalence in English language and Mathematics (6 credits in each subject), if not addressed separately, or
  • Other equivalent qualifications to be assessed by the Admissions Tutor
